Head of Data Competency

Des is a Servita Consultant with over 15 years’ experience as a full-stack developer specialising in data systems.

He is head of Servita’s internal Data Competency and has provided world class services for and on behalf of our valued clients in roles such as Software Engineer / Data Engineer / Data Architect / Solutions Designer / Machine Learning and Natural Language Processing Development Lead.

Des graduated in 2006 with a Double Honours degree in Computer Science and Mathematical Physics from the National University of Ireland.  He became a key part of the Servita family in 2017, working to support clients in Health, Education and Financial Services.

He is highly competent in SQL, JavaScript, C# and specialises in Python and Apache Spark/PySpark coding frameworks.  He is a great Cloud Architect and has in-depth experience in building ML/AI solutions on platforms such as AWS, Azure and GoogleCloud with TensorFlow to support fail fast and filter out incorrect results from NLTK full text, natural language searches.

In taking a semi-sabbatical from Servita, Des built a ‘bleeding-edge’ semantics-based natural language learning engine. The project received a glowing endorsement from Steven Pinker, one of the world’s pre-eminent cognitive scientists at Harvard University and author of several best-selling books.  Des built the solution using Python, PySpark and Databricks on AWS EC2 with Ansible.

  • Experienced in ETL processes, de-deduplication, cleaning, validation and loading of datasets, and data modelling and creation of APIs to allow standardised access to the dataPython (2 & 3, Numpy, Scipy, Pandas, PySpark, Databricks, Azure DataFactory – ETL at scale)
